What licence do you need to drive a hire van in the UK?
Most vans can be driven on a standard car licence, but larger vans and minibuses have rules. Here's a plain-English breakdown of what you can drive and when you need extra entitlement.
The good news: most hire vans in the UK can be driven on a full standard car (Category B) licence. But the rules change as the vehicle gets bigger — and they depend on when you passed your test.
Vans you can drive on a standard car licence
If you passed your driving test before 1 January 1997, you automatically have extra entitlements (often shown as C1 and D1 on your licence), letting you drive vehicles up to 7.5 tonnes and minibuses up to 16 seats.
If you passed on or after 1 January 1997, a standard Category B licence lets you drive vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight (GVW). This covers almost every van you'll see on a UK hire fleet:
- Small vans (e.g. Ford Transit Connect, VW Caddy)
- Medium vans (e.g. Mercedes Vito, Ford Transit Custom)
- Large vans (e.g. Mercedes Sprinter, Ford Transit LWB)
- Luton box vans (with or without tail lift)
When you need extra entitlement
- 7.5t box vans — these exceed 3.5 tonnes, so you'll need C1 entitlement. If you passed after 1997, you'll need to take an extra test to gain it. Many hire firms won't rent these to under-entitled drivers.
- Minibuses (9+ seats) — require D1 entitlement (or pre-1997 rights). There are some exceptions for non-commercial driving, but hire firms usually insist on the correct entitlement.
Before you collect
- Check your photocard licence is valid and not expired.
- Bring both parts if you have an older paper counterpart.
- Check for endorsements — some firms decline drivers with certain points.
- Have your licence code ready — many firms now use the DVLA share-code system to check your record online.
Tip: If you're unsure whether a specific van is within your entitlement, ask the hire company for the vehicle's GVW before you book.
Age limits
Most hire companies require drivers to be 25 or over for larger vans and 7.5t vehicles, and many charge a young-driver surcharge for 21–24 year olds even on smaller vans. Check the age policy when you compare quotes.
